The best mahjong set is the one built for the style you play. American mahjong needs a 152-tile set with 8 jokers and racks. Chinese, Hong Kong and Filipino mahjong use 144 tiles. Riichi (Japanese) mahjong uses 136 tiles plus red fives.
For American mahjong, a classic melamine set with racks and pushers, like Yellow Mountain Imports' Huntington, costs about $170 to $200. For Chinese or Filipino mahjong, a basic 144-tile set from the same company costs about $60.
We haven't tested these sets hands-on yet. The picks below are based on published specs and on prices we checked in October 2026, so confirm the current price before you buy.

Each set name links to the maker's own store (White Swan sets are sold through GammonVillage, the brand's maker). We don't earn a commission on these links.
The Huntington set includes Wright-Patterson scoring coins, dice and a wind indicator along with its racks. The Rouge Oasis set has Western letters and numbers printed on its tiles, which helps beginners. The Emerald Weave set is marked as not suitable for American or Riichi rules, which is fine if you play Chinese, Hong Kong or Filipino mahjong.
How many tiles do you need for each style?
Each style uses a different tile count, and the wrong set can't be fixed by changing the rules.
Style | Tiles | Special tiles |
|---|---|---|
American (NMJL) | 152 | 8 jokers and 8 flowers |
Chinese and Hong Kong | 144 | 4 flowers and 4 seasons |
Filipino | 144 | Winds, dragons, flowers and seasons all count as flowers |
Riichi (Japanese) | 136 | No flowers; red fives (aka dora) for bonus points |
Taiwanese | 144 | Extra flowers at some tables; 16-tile hands |
Many sets ship a few spare tiles, which is why you'll see listings for 146 or 166 tiles.
Can one mahjong set play every style?
A 144-tile Chinese set is the most flexible choice. It plays Chinese, Hong Kong and Filipino mahjong as is, Taiwanese mahjong too (some tables add extra bonus tiles), and Riichi if you set aside the flowers and seasons (you'll miss the red fives).
It can't play American mahjong, which needs the 8 jokers. An American set works the other way around: take out the jokers and it plays Filipino or Chinese mahjong. If your group plays both American and Filipino mahjong, buy the American set.
What size mahjong tiles should you get?
Standard tiles measure about 30 × 23 mm (roughly 1.2 × 0.9 inches). Large tiles run 35 to 40 mm tall and are easier to read and handle, but heavier to carry.
Pick large tiles for older players or anyone who struggles with small print. Pick standard or small tiles if you travel with the set or play at a small table.
Which mahjong tile material is best?
Melamine is the best value for most players: durable, affordable and easy to clean. Acrylic costs more, feels heavier and shows crisper engraving.
- Melamine: the standard in most sets, including Yellow Mountain Imports' American sets.
- Acrylic: heavier, glossy and crisp, a step up in feel from melamine.
- Bakelite: vintage, warm-feeling and collectible, but expensive and hard to find.
- Bone and bamboo: found in antique sets. Beautiful, but costly and they need more care.
Do you need racks and pushers?
You need racks for American mahjong, since the game is played with tiles standing on racks and walls pushed forward with pushers. Most American sets include all-in-one racks with built-in pushers.
Racks are optional for Chinese and Filipino mahjong. If you do buy them, clear acrylic racks let you see your tiles easily, while wooden racks are sturdier.
How much should you spend on a mahjong set?
Expect to pay about $60 for a basic 144-tile set, $170 to $220 for a complete American set with racks, and $240 or more for a designer acrylic set.
- Under $70: a basic Chinese or Filipino set in a vinyl case, with dice and a wind indicator but no racks.
- $170 to $220: a complete American set with racks, pushers and a case. This is where most American players should start.
- $240 to $625: designer acrylic sets, chosen for looks as much as play.
Spending more buys looks and feel, not better rules support. A $60 set plays Filipino mahjong exactly as well as a $600 one.
What should you check before you buy?
Check five things on the listing before you pay:
- Tile count: 152 with 8 jokers for American, 144 for Chinese and Filipino, 136 plus red fives for Riichi.
- Spares: a couple of spare tiles helps when one goes missing.
- Legibility: deep, clearly colored engraving, and corner numbers if you're still learning.
- What's included: racks, pushers, dice, wind indicator and scoring chips or coins.
- Case: a hard case protects the tiles; a soft case is lighter to carry.
Read recent buyer reviews too. Some popular sets carry low shopper ratings, and photos rarely show how legible the tiles are.
